Overview
Principal Designers at Southern Glazer’s work lead one or more product portfolios and report to the Director, Digital Product Design. This role works across product and services for integrated business functions, supply chain, retail customers, Principal Designers set the quality standard for product design at Southern Glazer’s.
Primary Responsibilities
- Understand the market opportunity for innovative new digital products and services
- Explore new technologies for applicability to Southern Glazer’s business
- Lead problem-framing & ideation sessions
- Lead design thinking workshops and train others how to use design thinking techniques to innovate
- Create design hypotheses and explore divergent ideas and potential solutions
- Partner with enterprise technology to create proofs of concepts for new technologies
- Explore low-code opportunities to bring design to the forefront
- Collaborate with design researchers to continuously learn and iterate design work
- Collaborate with company leadership to ideate, concept, and prototype solutions to challenging business problems
- Lead design reviews with executive-level colleagues
Additional Primary Responsibilities
- Provide solid rationale for design decisions
- Make compelling and persuasive presentation of ideas, concepts, and in-progress design work
- Ensure the work done by designers meets our quality standards
- Adapt the product’s design language as it evolves
- Contribute to the evolution of our multi-theme design system
- Model collaboration and thought leadership, help colleagues develop and articulate design POVs
- Appropriately inclusive of software development in the design process
- Collaborate with software engineering, analytics, and QA teammates to bring ideas to life and products to market
- Partner with software engineering counterparts to improve design-to-code workflows
- Support the OKRs of product portfolios as a principal design partner
- Contribute and develop ideas to help the portfolio achieve its business outcomes
- Define the product’s design strategy, help the portfolio director understand the design strategy and contribute to the product roadmap
Minimum Qualifications
- 8+ years of digital product design experience, inclusive of mobile app design, web design, and design systems
- 5+ years of experience designing enterprise-level e-commerce applications (web and/or native app)
- 2+ years leading others, as a team lead or manager
- Portfolio inclusive of digital project work showing end-to-end experience: from ideation to launch
- Familiarity with the full digital product lifecycle, using product roadmaps, story mapping, writing design stories, designing features, direct collaboration with development teams
- Expert knowledge of: Design & prototyping tools (Figma, Protopie, Framer, Canvaa), Collaboration tools (Miro, Confluence, Jira), Global design systems, Responsive design best practices
- Ability to generate, visualize and prototype new concepts to demonstrate and test with users and stakeholders
- Experience with design thinking methodology in practice, with portfolio examples
- Experience leading design in an agile business environment, with portfolio examples
- Experience developing global design systems, with portfolio examples

- Physical demands include a considerable amount of time sitting and typing/keyboarding, using a computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse, and monitor), or adding machine
- Physical demands with activity or condition may include walking, bending, reaching, standing, squatting, and stooping
- May require occasional lifting/lowering, pushing, carrying, or pulling up to 20lbs
