Overview

SGWS is seeking an innovative and driven Director, Data Products Lead to join the Market Intelligence Data Product team. This team owns the end-to-end strategy for sourcing, developing, and optimizing the utility of data related to market intelligence and retailer observations. The team is responsible for managing, communicating, and applying proper governance over foundational datasets used to build SGWS digital products and services. The role partners closely with Product, Technology, and Commercial teams to ensure foundational data is fit for purpose, properly governed, and supported by clear data quality standards. This position is accountable for ensuring data and insights within the assigned domain are understood, governed, fit for purpose, available for product innovation, and positioned to maximize business impact for SGWS.

 

The Data Product Lead serves as a domain leader for specialized foundational data, combining data lifecycle management, technical proficiency, and commercial acumen to shape how SGWS leverages data and strengthens data governance. This role is accountable for the utility of foundational third-party datasets used to build products and services, including setting the roadmap and managing execution across the full lifecycle of data sources. Responsibilities include evaluating new third-party datasets, supporting ingestion and harmonization into SGWS systems, maintaining operational reliability, ensuring governance and data quality expectations are understood and met, and advancing alignment with data initiatives and business goals. The role also guides cross-functional teams in identifying solutions, resolving issues, and communicating the data story.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Own complex datasets and partner with stakeholders and software development teams using Agile methodologies to ensure data is fit for purpose and aligned to business needs.  
  • Develop and communicate data product roadmaps, translating priorities and progress for diverse stakeholder audiences.  
  • Implement and maintain data governance practices, including data access, cataloging, modeling, metadata, legislative considerations, and documentation.  
  • Maintain proactive verbal and written communication to convey data vision, roadmap, risks, and progress while selecting the right tools to manage delivery cadence and build cross-functional alignment.  
  • Apply technical and analytical judgment to evaluate data, interpret findings, and support data-driven decisions.  
  • Collaborate with technical teams to optimize data architecture, ensuring efficient data integration, transformation, and delivery processes while maintaining security and compliance standards 
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, engineers, designers, and other product leads. Translate requirements between these groups and ensure alignment with the data product vision. 
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle conflicts and differing opinions effectively by creating alignment and visibility across various teams and departments. Promote a harmonious and cooperative work environment while driving data product goals. 
  • Data-Driven Approach: Embrace a data-driven mindset and approach. Clearly define key performance indicators (KPIs) and success metrics for our data products. Ensure that necessary instrumentation is in place to measure and validate the success and impact of our work, making data-informed decisions. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a bridge between the data team and other business units. Engage with key stakeholders to understand their needs and work collaboratively to deliver solutions that meet their expectations and enhance their operations.
  • Train and mentor team members to develop their skills and expertise in data product management and analytics.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in related field (e.g., computer science, data analytics, engineering, economics, statistics)
  • 10+ years of relevant experience working in a complex data environment and with data as a product  
  • Have a solid understanding of data governance frameworks  
  • Have a solid understanding on data analysis and approaches used to make data drive decisions  
  • Demonstrated proficiency in various technologies to assist day-to-day tasks with a strong emphasis on JIRA knowledge preferred and good understanding of agile software development methodologies like Scrum 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have a passion for solving complex business questions with data science and AI
  • Experience in the Beverage Alcohol Industry (Supplier, Distributor, or Retailer)
  • Solid knowledge of data models and structures, as well as database design tools and query languages
  • Experience building web applications in Shiny, Dash, Streamlit, or Bokeh
  • Experience with AWS Sagemaker, Posit Workbench/Connect, and/or Databricks
  • Experience utilizing common CPG data sources (Nielsen, IRI, etc)
  • Proficiency/familiarity with a variety of ML models, LLM based models, and GenAI tools
  • Solid knowledge of AI, its potential roles in solving business problems, and the future trajectory of generative AI models
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills encompassing employee coaching, objective setting, and fostering professional development.
  • Strong ability to conduct statistical analyses and build models with advanced scripting languages.
  • Proven attention to detail and ability to maintain data accuracy and integrity.
